How important is Research?
Lifelong disorders have profound effects on an individual’s social, emotional and cognitive development. It has implications for the family, state services and society at large. International evidence indicates an alarming rise in the prevalence of the condition.
How can we optimise our Research?
Large samples of participants are required to uncover epidemiological trends, genetic markers as well as elucidating best treatment approaches. Therefore we need to invest in optimising research efforts by enhancing research infrastructure and emphasizing collaborations among researchers, families, service providers and the ASD community.
Are there examples of existing registries?
The National Database for Autism Research (NDAR), the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) and the Autism Genetics Resource Exchange (AGRE) have delivered numerous important research discoveries and informed state and federal health, education and social policies.
